Archibald Felce Dick-Cleland died in Bristol on 31st January, 1952, after a long illness. He was 69 years of age.
He was trained at the Camborne School of Mines from 1902 to 1905 when he received the Diploma of the School, and went to Rhodesia to work on the Kia Ora mine. In 1907 he took a post in the South Crofty mine, Cornwall, and in the following year went to Mexico to join the staff of Mexico Mines of El Oro, Ltd., becoming superintendent of the Amparo Mining Co. in 1910. He resigned in 1914 to enlist in H.M. Forces, serving in France with the Royal Engineers (Tunnellers) until 1919, with the rank of major.
On demobilization he returned to Mexico as general superintendent, Amparo Exploration Co., in 1923 taking the position of general foreman at Santa Gertrudis, Pachuca. He was appointed underground manager of Mawchi Mines, Ltd., Burma, in 1926, but left in 1927 and later took the position of assistant manager of Taquah and Abosso Mines, Ltd., Gold Coast. From 1928 to 1929 he was assistant superintendent of the African Manganese Co., Gold Coast.
During the period 1929-1935 Mr. Dick-Cleland worked in Nigeria as area manager, and later general manager, for Nigerian Base Metals Corporation, Ltd., and from 1935 to 1936 he was general manager of Watende Mines, Ltd., Kenya. From 1937 onwards he lived in England, with occasional professional visits abroad, and during the 1939-45 war was a full-time Air Raid Warden in London.
Mr. Dick-Cleland was elected to Studentship of the Institution in 1905, was transferred to Associateship in 1908, and to Membership in 1927.
