William Edmund Carpenter died in Western Australia on November 28th, 1924, from heart failure following an attack of influenza.

He received his technical training at the Thames School of Mines, New Zealand, in 1898-4, and after a short engagement as assistant assayer to one of the branches of the Bank of New Zealand, he was employed as assayer and foreman of the treatment plant at the Talisman Mine for upwards of five years. After a short experience as battery manager for the Yalwal Mines, N.S.W., he returned to New Zealand for a further three years at the Talisman Mine.

In 1905 he went to West Africa as battery manager and assistant general manager to the Bibiani Gold Fields, Ltd., but was compelled to resign in 1907 through ill health. He returned to Western Australia as assistant chemist to the Lancefield Gold Mining Co., and in 1908 was appointed metallurgist for the Gwalia Consolidated, Ltd., Wiluna. He left that employ in the following year to take up a position on the Gladsome Mine, Comet Vale, and in 1912 was appointed on the staff of the Sons of Gwalia, Ltd., in whose employment he remained until his death.

Mr. Carpenter was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1906.
