Thomas John Cullen died on January 1st, 1924, in Nigeria, at the age of 40.
He began his professional career in 1898 as assistant to his father in deep alluvial tin mines in New South Wales, and was subsequently employed as sampler, timberman and shaftman in Webbs’ Silver mine and Webbs’ Gonsols, mining copper and silver.
In 1903 he went to West Africa to join the staff of the Alrbontiakoon Block 1 Company, and in 1906 transferred to the Tarquah and Abosso Co. In 1908 he went for about a year to Ouro Preto, Brazil, returning to the Tarquah and Abosso mine in 1909, and in the following year he became manager of a tin property in Nigeria. In 1912 he took charge of the alluvial gold mining carried on by a French Company on the Ivory Coast. In the following year he was appointed general manager of the Offin River Gold Estates, Ltd., which position he held until his death.
Mr. Cullen was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1921.
