Stanley Everard Clay commenced his career in September, 1882, when he became a pupil at the Pinxton Collieries, and three years later he obtained his manager’s certificate of competency. He remained at Pinxton until 1890 as surveyor and assistant manager. During the following 10 years he visited South America, South Africa, Norway, and West Africa.

He was for a time manager of the Venezuelan Austin Gold Mining Co., Ltd., and later of the Modderfontein Gold Mining Co., Ltd. In 1894 he was appointed consulting engineer to S. Neumann & Co. of Johannesburg, and two years later he was consultant to J.B. Robinson and the South African Banking Corporation.

After reporting on properties in Scandinavia and West Africa, he was appointed, in 1900, consulting engineer to various West African companies, including the Gold Coast Amalgamated Mines, and the Wassau (Gold Coast) Mining Co., Ltd. He later became a director of the Tati Co. of Bechuanaland.

Mr. Clay was elected a Member of the Institution in 1901.
