Joseph Arnott Chennells died in Southern Rhodesia early in 1940.
From 1886 to 1892 he was employed as a mechanical engineer in England and the Transvaal. He was appointed manager of the Holfontein Collieries in the Transvaal and held that position, from 1894 to 1896, when he went to Rhodesia and was manager of the Anbenidi Gold Mining Co., Ltd., until 1901. He remained in Rhodesia for a number of years, managing various mines such as the Somerset Development Co., and the Geelong, White Rose, and Theba gold mines.’
About 1930 he was for a year with the Sociedade Agricola da Ganda, Angola, Portuguese West Africa, but subsequently returned to Rhodesia to take over the management of the Legion Mine.
Mr. Chennells was elected a Member of the Institution in 1904.
