John Cooper died at Zacatecas, Mexico, in June, 1919, at the age of 50.
He started his mining career at an early age, in 1884, from which year to 1896 he was employed at Earl Fitzwilliam’s collieries in all classes of mining work. Meantime, in 1893 and 1894, he attended University College, Sheffield, where in the latter year he obtained the full college Diploma. (First Class). In 1893 he received the Government certificate in respect of colliery undermanager’s qualifications, and in 1894 he was awarded the South Kensington certificate for coal and metal mining (first class, advanced).
In 1897 he was appointed manager of the Cervantes Zinc Mine, Santander, Spain. The remainder of his life’s work was done in Mexico. From 1899 to 1908 he was superintendent of the copper mines of the Mazapil Copper Co., Ltd., Concepcion del Oro, which he left in the latter year to take charge of the Mexico Mines of El Oro, Ltd., mines. In 1913 he was engaged on the Dos Estrellas Mine, also at El Oro, and at his death he was with the Santa Cruz Mining Co., Ltd., at Zacatecas.
Mr. Cooper was elected a Member of the Institution in 1905.
