Bernard Hedley Charlton was killed in action-on March 22nd, 1918, at the age of 32 years.
He was educated at Guisborough Grammar School and subsequently at Rossall School, and commenced his technical training at the Royal School of Mines where he obtained the Associateship in 1906.
On leaving the R.S.M., he was for upwards of two years surveyor to the Spawood Ironstone Mines, in 1909 for a short period assistant viewer at the Hebburn and Wallsend Collieries, and then for about two years returned to the Spawood Ironstone Mines as assistant manager. From 1911 to 1915, he was manager of the Hedley Hope Collieries at Tow Law, Go. Durham.
Joining H.M. Forces, he had a distinguished career, being awarded the Military Cross and twice mentioned in despatches. At the date of his death he held the rank of Lieut.-Col. of the 4th Yorkshire Regiment.
Mr. Charlton was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1906, and transferred to Associateship in 1915.
