Arthur James Caddick died in Middlesbrough on 11th August, 1960, at the age of 74.
Mr. Caddick was educated at Middlesborough High School and afterwards trained for three years in the laboratories of the North Eastern Steel Co., Ltd., Middlesbrough. In 1904, he was appointed senior assistant metallurgical chemist to the British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., Rugby, remaining there until 1906, when he joined Messrs. Robey and Co., Ltd., Lincoln, as metallurgical assistant. Three years later he joined James Oakes and Co., Ltd., Alfreton, as metallurgical engineer and in 1910 was appointed metallurgist and assistant blast-furnace manager to the Tees Furnace Co., Ltd., Cleveland.
Mr. Caddick left England for Spain in 1910 to join Rio Tinto Co., Ltd., Huelva, as assistant chemical and metallurgical engineer, later becoming superintendent of the sulphuric acid works and of the industrial research department. From 1916 to 1918 he was also manager of the copper smelter and in 1919 he was promoted chief metallurgical engineer, with responsibility for the administration and development of the whole of the company’s metallurgical and chemical works and operations.
He returned to England in 1924 and from 1925 to 1929 was in consulting practice in Middlesbrough. Since that date Mr. Caddick had been for many years coke oven manager and later by-products manager of the South Durham Steel and Iron Co., Ltd., Cargo Fleet Iron Co., Ltd., and South Bank Chemical Co., Ltd., and associated companies. He was appointed general manager of Sadler and Co., Ltd., chemical manufacturers of Middlesbrough, in 1950 and retired in 1953. He did, however, go to Kenya in an advisory capacity for some months during 1954-55 for Njoro Industries, Ltd., Tororo.
Mr. Caddick was the author of many technical papers and had served on the committees of numerous societies and associations connected with the chemical and metallurgical industries.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1917.
