Reginald Frederick Barker died in the Federated Malay States on September 18th, 1926.
His career started with six years of workshop experience as a Mechanical engineer, followed by two years in the engine rooms of ocean-going steamers. He then studied at the University of Sydney, N.S.W., and graduated as Bachelor of Engineering in 1900.
For two years he was engaged on mines in New South Wales, and then, paid a year’s visit to Tasmania, returning to New South Wales where for two years he occupied the position of technical expert in the engineering department of a Sydney firm of mining engineers. In 1906 he was appointed engineer for the construction of new smelting works at Leigh’s Creek, South Australia, for the Tasmania Copper Co., Ltd. On completion of this work, in 1908 he joined the staff of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co., Ltd., at Broken Hill, N.S.W. He subsequently returned to Sydney and in 1916 had a course at the Stawell School of Mines and Industries, Victoria.
In 1922 he went to the Federated Malay States to join the staff of Messrs. McAlister & Co., Ltd., of Ipoh, with whom he was connected until his death.
Mr. Barker was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1907.
