Lieutenant Patrick Matthew Brodigan, Reconnaissance Regiment, was killed in action in Italy in October, 1944, at the age of 32.
He was the older son of the late Mr. C.B. Brodigan, M.Inst.M.M. (Vice-President, 1935-38), and began his mining career as official learner at New Modderfontein Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Transvaal, in 1931. In 1934 he entered the Royal School of Mines, but left to resume his work at New Medderfontein in 1936. In 1939 he obtained an appointment with Crown Mines, Ltd., Johannesburg, and at the outbreak of war joined the South African Forces, serving in the North African campaign where he was awarded the Military Medal. He was elected a Student of the Institution in 1936.
