The Rt. Hon. Lord Baillieu K.B.E., C.M.G. died on 18 June, 1967. He was 77 years of age.
Lord Baillieu was educated at the University, of Melbourne and at Oxford. After graduating, he was called to the Inner Temple, as a barrister, and in the First World War served in the Australian Imperial Forces and the Flying Corps, being mentioned in despatches.
From 1929 to 1939 he represented H.M. Government in the Commonwealth of Australia on the Imperial Communications Advisory Committee, and this was a forerunner of the long list of responsible positions in which he represented H.M. Government in connexion with supplies of raw materials. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1938. From 1945 to 1947 he was President of the Federation of British Industries, having been Deputy President since 1944, and in 1948 headed the British Trade Mission to Argentina. Lord Baillieu was Chairman of the Commonwealth Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (formerly known as the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions) from 1946 to 1961. He was Honorary Treasurer of the Fourth Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in the United Kingdom in 1949. From 1949 to 1957 he was Chairman of the Dunlop Rubber Co. Ltd., then becoming its President; he was also associated with many other companies.
Lord Baillieu was created Baron in 1953, and in the same year was elected an Honorary Member of the institution of Mining and Metallurgy. In 1961 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Institution in recognition of his distinguished services to the Commonwealth mining and metallurgical industries.
