Edwin Charles Bloomfield died on February 9th, 1947, at the age of 58, after a few months’ illness.
He was a student for three years at the Sir John Cass Technical Institute and from 1909 to 1912 was at the Royal School of Mines where he gained the A.R.S.M.
For a few months in 1910 he assisted Mr. Chester W. Purington in prospecting gold placers in North-East Siberia, and from September, 1912, to June, 1914, he remained in Russia in the employment of Tanalyk Corporation, Ltd., at their copper, gold and coal mines. For a year subsequently he worked for the Russian Mining Corporation, Ltd., in the Altai District of Siberia, and later spent a few months examining and reporting on gold mines for the Yenesi Government of Siberia.
ln December, 1915, he visited the U.S.A. and was engaged in petrological research at Stanford University and in visiting various mining districts. He took charge of the San Francisco office of Mr. H.C. Hoover from May to September, 1916, and then went to British Columbia for a Vancouver syndicate.
He joined the Canadian Engineers in November, 1916, and served as a lieutenant in the Tunnelling Corps until 1919.
On demobilization he took a supplementary course in Geology at the Royal School of Mines, and in September, 1919, was appointed geologist to the Burma Corporation, Ltd. He returned to England in 1924 and worked for a year at the London office of Selection Trust, Ltd., before being appointed general manager of their subsidiary, the Tetiuhe Mining Corporation, operating a lead-zinc-silver mine in Siberia, where he was employed for two years.
From 1927 to 1932 he made examinations of mines and mineral deposits in Europe for Selection Trust, and then maintained a consultant practice for two years.
In 1934, Mr. Bloomfield took over the general managership of Tanganyika Diamond and Gold Development Co. for three years and on his return to England in 1937 he resumed his consulting practice.
In 1940 he was in Jugoslavia, but returned to England and in 1941 was appointed manager of the Greenside mine, Glenridding, Penrith, for Basinghall Mining Syndicate, Ltd., which position he held at the time of his death.
He was elected to Membership of the Institution in 1925.
