British Mining No 54 – Lead Mine Waggons
By R.A. Fairbairn
Little has been written about the means of transporting ore and rock from the mines to the surface.
The introduction of wooden rails in the 16th century allowed the use of wheeled vehicles and began a process which eventually led to great increases in efficiency by means of the horse-drawn and then the locomotive-drawn waggon.
This monograph traces the development of waggons in mining for lead and related minerals over the centuries.
