The engine house was built in 1886 for a 60 inch pumping engine at Turnavore Shaft which was later moved to the adjacent Wheal Friendly in 1902.
Through much of the 18th century and before the area around Polberrow was mined for tin by openworks.
Poberro Tin Mines Ltd was formed in 1934. Their aim was to find the Wheal Kitty Lode but the failure to find it resulted in company liquidation in 1941.
