With planning permission granted, preliminary work began in 1977 and continued until February 1980, when Thyssen (GB) Ltd began sinking the 965 metre deep shafts. Like the other eight shafts at Selby they were 7.315 m (24 feet) in diameter.
Whitemoor was linked to Riccall in November 1986 and production began in January 1988. The faces were soon troubled by faulting, however, and the two mines were merged in July 1996, and production at Whitemoor ended in May 1998.
