Merthyr Tydfil

This was an opencast site that was worked in 1961 by Taylor Woodrow. Opencast coal production on a large scale has been in operation in Glamorgan since 1946. In 1960 it was estimated that opencast workings could be carried out in an area of 35,000 acres in south Wales. This had been worked out after allowing for the unavailability of coal in the deeper seams and the reserves sterilized by existing developments. To that date, 4,500 acres had been worked and restored, and over 2,000 acres were in production. It was estimated that 9,300,000 tons of coal had been extracted by opencast mining in Glamorgan.
