Bourne & Robinson sank this colliery around 1873, and worked it until the late 1880s, when it was acquired by Whitecross Co. Ltd. Sherdley appears to have been closed around 1902, but had been reopened by Sutton Heath & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd by 1905. The latter worked until around 1943, when Sherdley closed. It was retained for pumping, being near Alexandra, and the company’s own Lea Green and Bold collieries, which were both down dip.
In 1950 the National Coal Board was using Sherdley as a pumping station.
