Cynheidre, Gwendraeth

Along with the Margam New Mine, this anthracite slant was supposed to be the bright new future for the South Wales Coalfield. The first borehole was sunk in 1982 with the £30 million project starting in 1986. Two 1800 metre drifts were driven at a gradient of 1 in 5 until the Carway Fawr seam was struck in 1988. It was intended to employ up to 750 men working an estimated 8 million tonnes of coal. The drifts were sealed off and the surface buildings were demolished in 1992.

The colliery was part of Cynheidre Colliery.
