CAEGLAS COLLIERY

Mynydd Sylen, (51300908)

This was an anthracite slant that employed 50 men in 1907 and 42 men in 1908. It was owned in 1909/11 by the Caeglas Anthracite Colliery Company and managed in those years by William Rees. It employed 42 men in 1909 and 32 men in 1911. In 1913 it was owned by J.W. Paton of Llanelli. In that year it was managed by D. Williams and employed 12 men. No men were employed in 1924. In 1930 it was owned by Llewellyn and Sons with David Bassett as the manager and employed 107 men along with Mynydd Sylen.

This was also a small level that was worked under license from the National Coal Board. It was owned in the 1950s and 1960s by T.T. Shankland, and in the 1970s by the Caeglas Colliery Company. It originally worked the Lower Brindini seam which had a section of coal 15 inches, dirt 3 inches, and coal 13 inches.
