John Woodgate died on April 29th, 1911, aged about 41.
He was educated at University College, Liverpool, and from 1888 to 1891 studied at the Clausthal Mining School in Germany, afterwards spending some months in the foundry and drawing office of Messrs. Fawcett, Preston & Co., at Liverpool. In 1892 he went to Chile, in which country he was engaged in mining right up to the time of his death. His work was chiefly in connection with copper and silver mines, and for several years, starting from 1895, he was general manager of the Pique del Llano Silver Mine, Huantajaya, Iquique. For some months prior to his death he had been in failing health, and his medical advisers warned him against continuing to reside in high altitudes. He was arranging to leave Collahuasi when his death occurred suddenly. Mr. Woodgate was elected a Member of the Institution in 1900.
