Arthur George Wood died of pneumonia in Rangoon General Hospital on November 18th, 1922.
From 1881 to 1888 he was an articled pupil to the mining overseer to the Lords of the Admiralty, at Alston Moor, near Carlisle, and on the completion of his articles he undertook a year’s course as a student in the metallurgical laboratory at the Royal School of Mines, London. In 1885 he went to North Carolina, U.S.A., as assistant engineer at the Russell Gold Mine, of which he was appointed general manager in 1888. In 1892 he proceeded to South America as superintendent for the Dona Maria Mining Co., of New York, at their gold mines at Banco, Republic of Colombia, four years later becoming general manager of another gold mine at Miraflores, Tolima. He remained in Colombia until 1896. In 1898 he went to West Africa to engage in prospecting, and in 1902 was in charge of an expedition in French West Africa under the direction of the Ivory Coast Exploring Syndicate, Ltd. From 1904 to 1906 he was occupied in copper mining in Italy, but returned to West Africa in 1907. In 1910 he was on the staff of the Nigeria Tin Trust and Exploration Co. He went to Burma in 1916, when he engaged in Wolfram mining.
Mr. Wood was elected a Member of the Institution in 1902.
