George Theodore Walters died in Johannesburg on 26th May, 1954, at the age of 51.
Born at Scarsdale, New York, his parents moved to Alberta and he continued his schooling at Mount Royal College, Calgary. He entered the University of Alberta, Edmonton, in 1921, and in 1925 was awarded the B.Sc. degree in Arts, specializing in geology. During the summer of 1925 he accompanied a Government geological survey party in Mountain Park as student assistant, and then attended the Provincial Normal School, Calgary, to gain an Academic Teacher’s Certificate. After another vacation period in 1926 in the Foothills and Coalspur areas of Alberta, he began graduate work at the University of Toronto, but after a year interrupted his studies to take a post in 1927 as geologist to the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, Ltd. He was seconded to Loangwa Concessions (N.R.), Ltd., and in 1930 worked for a few months at Rhodesia Minerals Concession, Ltd., before returning to Canada for a further year’s postgraduate study at the University of Toronto.
He rejoined Rhodesia Minerals Concession, Ltd., in June, 1931, remaining there for four years. In July, 1935, he was appointed field manager of Loangwa Concessions (N.R.), Ltd., Broken Hill, and in February, 1939, became mine geologist to Rhokana Corporation, Ltd., Kitwe, in charge of geological work at Nkana mine, nine months later transferring to Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., Chingola. From 1944 to 1948 Mr. Walters was field manager with Kaokoveld Exploration Co., Ltd., Grootfontein, South-West Africa, and in February, 1948, was transferred to the head office of Anglo American Corporation where he held the post of geologist in the consulting geologist’s department. He was seconded to the Kleinzee mine of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., Namaqualand, in March, 1948, and three years later, in July, 1951, went to Kitwe as geologist to Rhokana Corporation, Ltd. He was appointed resident geologist at Kansanshi mine of Kansanshi Copper Mining Co., Ltd., Solwezi, in February, 1952, and held that position at the time of his death.
Mr. Walters was elected a Member of the Institution in 1952.
