Charles George Lanfear Thompson died in a nursing home in London on March 25th, 1929, at the age of 37.
An Australian by birth, he received his technical training in the Engineering School, Melbourne University. On graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Mining Engineering, he obtained practical experience at the Mount Lyell Copper Mines, Tasmania, until the outbreak of war, when he joined the Australian Imperial Forces and served in Egypt and Palestine.
In 1919 he went to Papua as assistant engineer to the New Guinea Copper Mines, Ltd, his work there including surveys for railway and other transport and a hydro-electric power scheme. In 1923 he went to West Africa, to join the staff of the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Ltd., as chief surveyor, and in 1927 he was appointed manager of Bibiani, Ltd.
Mr. Thompson was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1925.
