Stephen Vivian died at his home at Ealing, London, on December 2nd, 1937, at the age of 80.
He was born at Llandudno, and began his mining career as an assistant to his father, a mine manager on the staff of Messrs. John Taylor & Sons. On his father’s death in 1879 he was appointed joint manager with his brother of the Mwyndy Iron Ore Company, near Llantrissant, and in the succeeding years he also managed the Trecastle and other associated mines in the same locality.
He acted as consulting engineer to companies operating mines in Wales and Spain, and later spent some time in Cornwall. He then went to India, where he was superintendent of the Mysore mine, but returned to England to join the firm of Messrs. Punchard, McTaggart & Lowther. Later he was again connected with mining enterprises in Spain, and paid many visits to that country.
Mr. Vivian was elected a Member of the Institution in 1892; he was a Member of Council from 1912 to 1935, and a Vice-President of the Institution for two periods, 1919 to 1921 and 1923 to 1926.
