George William Sydenham died in South Africa on 20th July, 1963. He 75 years of age.
Mr. Sydenham began his professional career with Messrs. Johnson, Matthey and Co., Ltd., and in 1909 was transferred to the company’s electrolytic refinery. Shortly afterwards he was promoted to the position of assistant to the manager. During 1910 and 1911 Mr. Sydenham attended courses in metallurgy and elementary chemistry at Sir John Cass Institute, London.
Mr. Sydenham served throughout the First World War and, following his demobilization, left the United Kingdom to take up the position of assistant superintendent in charge of the silver refinery branch of Rand Refinery, Ltd., Germiston, South Africa. He remained with Rand Refinery, Ltd., until his retirement in 1959.
Mr. Sydenham was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1922.
