Joseph Bennett Sutton died in Johannesburg, on August 28th, 1939, at the age of 53.
He received his technical education at the South African School of Mines and Technology, Johannesburg, and was subsequently admitted to the degree of B.Sc. (Eng.) of the University of the Witwatersrand. In his professional career he was associated solely with the gold mining industry of the Witwatersrand, first as a member of the staff of the Geldenhuis Deep Gold Mining Co., Ltd., in 1911, and later with the City and Suburban Gold Mining Co., Ltd. and Rand Mines, Ltd.
During 1919-20 he was engaged in research work in connexion with the Tainton electrolytic process for recovering gold, after which he took up an appointment with the Modder East Gold Mining Co., Ltd. In 1922 he was appointed to the Crown Mines, Ltd., and at the time of his death was reduction officer on the staff of that company.
Mr. Sutton was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1910, and was elected an associate in 1919.
