Harold Stanley Underwood died on March 11th, 1918, at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, from pulmonary tuberculosis contracted-whilst serving in the Army Service Corps, from which he was discharged as unfit in March, 1916. He was about 50 years of age.
He studied at the Royal School of Mines from 1897 to 1900, and at the conclusion of his course acted as demonstrator in mine surveying. In 1901 he went to West Africa, where he was engaged in gold mining at Ashanti for thirteen months. A year later he proceeded to South Africa and spent two or three years on various mines in the Witwatersrand and Barberton districts. He returned to England in 1905, and resided at Wanstead in Essex until 1913, when he accepted an engagement with the Broomassie Mines, Ltd., Gold Coast, West Africa, which he held until the outbreak of the war.
Mr. Underwood was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1902, and transferred to Associateship in 1904.
