Frank Norman Spettigue died in a car accident in Spain on 8th June, 1955, at the age of 50.
After training at the Royal School of Mines from 1922 to 1926 and graduating A.R.S.M. in Mining, Mr. Spettigue took up employment at Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., Ontario, working in various capacities, and in December, 1926, was appointed assistant engineer at Premier Gold Mining Co., Ltd., British Columbia, where he was later promoted chief engineer.
He left Canada in 1930 and spent the rest of his career in the service of Rio Tinto Co., Ltd., in Huelva, Spain. For the first four years he was employed as assistant in the various opencast and underground departments, and from 1934 to 1937 was chief of South Lode and Valle mines, and then held the position of chief of classification.
Mr. Spettigue joined the Royal Engineers in September, 1940, and served for five years with the rank of major (staff), returning to Rio Tinto in October, 1945 as chief mining engineer. He was made deputy administrative manager in August, 1948, and in January, 1951, was appointed technical deputy manager.
He became a Student of the Institution in 1925, was transferred to Associate Membership in 1930, and to Membership in 1941.
