R. O. H. Spence died at Georgetown, British Guiana, on April 28th, 1922.
He was educated at Brunswick House School and Queen’s College, in British Guiana, and in 1884 obtained the Senior Cambridge Local Certificate. From 1886 to 1889 he was employed in the Colonial Civil Engineers’ Department, being afterwards transferred to the Department of Mines. During this period he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and Commissioner to administer oaths to affidavits in the Colony.
In June, 1896, he was appointed Government Warden in the goldfields of British Guiana, the duties of this position including the supervision and inspection, on behalf of the Government, of open works and mines and the administration in the gold district of all matters relating to mining generally, and he was attached to the Lands and Mines Department up to the date of his death.
While on leave in 1897 Mr. Spence attended a full year’s course at the Camborne School of Mines. In the following year, on his return to the Colony, he obtained a certificate of competency as a land surveyor, British Guiana. In 1901-2, while again on leave, he attended another year’s course at Camborne.
Mr. Spence was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1902.
