George Sowman died of yellow fever, at Axim, Gold Coast Colony, on June 27th, 1911.
From 1889 to 1890 he was assayer to the Murillo Silver Mines, Ontario, after which he spent six years on prospecting work in various districts of the Dominion. From 1896 to 1899 he was reduction officer at the Wondalli Gold Mines, Deccan, India, during part of the time being also assayer to the Hyderabad Company in the same district.
From 1900 he was occupied for more than two years in mining and prospecting in West Africa, and subsequently held appointments at Rangoon, Burma, with the Burma Prospecting Co.; at Kvarken, Orenburg, Siberia, with the Orsk Goldfields, Ltd.; and at Axim, Gold Coast Colony, where he died.
Mr. Sowman was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1902.
