John Ellison Scott was killed in auction on May 27th, 1918, while serving in France in the Durham Light Infantry, but news of his death did not reach the Institution until much later. He was about 35 years of age.
On leaving school he was apprenticed in the building trade for 6 years, and afterwards spent 3 years in the shipbuilding yards of Messrs. Sir William Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., Ltd.
In 1912, he went to West Africa as general assistant underground at the Broomassie mine, being afterwards transferred to the concentrator floor of the mine’s mill. He subsequently held appointments with the Taquah Mining & Exploration Co., Ltd, at Tarkwa, and with the Abosso Gold Mine, until he returned home to join H.M. Forces for the period of the war.
Mr. Scott was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1913.
