Edward Rengers Schoch died at his residence ‘Sweet Home,’ Warmbaths, Transvaal, on January 4th, 1942, at the age of 69.
From 1894 to 1897 he attended the full course at the School of Mines, Freiberg, Saxony, where he obtained the diplomas of M.E. and M.S., and then went to South Africa for about two years as surveyor to the East Rand Proprietary, Bonanza, Robinson, Worcester and Ferreira Mines.
For three years, from 1900 to 1903, he was in Western Australia as manager, of the Mines Trust and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., the Childe Harold Gold Mining Co., Ltd., and Hannan’s Gold Estates, Ltd.
In 1903 he went to West Africa as general manager of the Wassau (Gold Coast) Mining Co., Ltd., at Tarkwa, on a one year’s agreement, on the expiry of which he returned to South Africa to join the staff of the Anglo-French Exploration Co., Ltd., as manager of the Clutha Gold Mines and Cinnabar Venture, and the Mac Mac mine in the Eastern Transvaal. Joining the consulting engineer’s department of the company under the late Mr. E.J. Way, he reported on various mining properties, including gold, copper, nickel, chromite and diamonds, and in 1909 became manager of the Boksburg Cold Mining Co.
He retired from the Anglo-French association about ten years before his death but continued to practise privately as a consulting engineer, his chief preoccupation, however, in his later years being his citrus farm at Warmbaths. For several years he was on the directorate of the Village Main Reef Gold Mining Co. Ltd.
Mr Schoch was elected a member of the Institution in 1907.
