John Reed died at Bognor Regis, after a long illness, on June 16th, 1943, at the age of 62.
He received his early training as e pupil with John Ridley, mining engineer to the W.B. Lead Co., Ltd., at their lead mines in Allendale, Northumberland, and in 1898 was engaged as assistant surveyor at the Alston Moor mines of the Vieille Montagne Zinc Company.
From 1901 to 1905 he was an assistant at the copper and zinc mines of Llanfair Mines, Ltd., near Abergele, North Wales, and from 1905 to 1907 was engineer and surveyor to the Royalberg Copper Mines, Ltd., and the Sherman Mining Co., Ltd., at their mines in Norway.
After a few months as a colliery surveyor in County Durham he was engaged in 1908 by the Frontino and Bolivia, Company as surveyor at their gold mines in Colombia. With this company, now Frontino Gold Mines, Ltd., Mr. Reed remained until his retirement in 1937, and for twenty years held the position of general superintendent.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1911, and was transferred to Membership in 1925.
