Bernard Rance died in Upper Burma on August 22nd, 1921, at the age of 44.
In 1892 he started a course of mechanical and electrical engineering at the Manchester Technical School, which he continued at the City and Guilds Technical College in Finsbury, London, E.C. In September, 1894, he obtained an appointment with the Sheba Gold Mining Co., Ltd., in the Transvaal, where he was first employed in the erection and running of an electric transmission plant, afterwards becoming assistant to the chief engineer.
In 1897 he was for a short period at the Jumpers mine, followed by six months at the Moodie’s mine. In July, 1898, he went to the Federated Malay States, to join the staff of the Raub Australian G.M. Co., Ltd., at Sempan and Baub, and in February, 1903, he proceeded to Burma to take up any appointment as assistant mining engineer at Mogok for the Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd. On the resignation of Mr. A.H. Morgan, in February, 1916, he was appointed engineer-in-chief.
Mr. Rance was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1917.
