Robert Pattison Farquhar Prain died at Merchantville, New Jersey, U.S.A., on 11th May, 1959, at the age of 87.
Mr. Prain was educated at Cheltenham College between 1882 and 1890, having special tuition in chemistry, and then went to the Freiberg Mining Academy in Sunny, where he studied until 1894, working during vacation periods in mining areas of Germany and Austria.
He went to Chile in November, 1894, and began a long and interesting career in South America, pioneering and developing principally small rich high-grade silver mines at Huantahaya and elsewhere in Chile, and subsequently in Peru. He established his own practice, and his mining reports were much sought after. Since his retirement, some 20 years ago, he had lived in Merchantville, New Jersey.
Mr. Prain was elected a Member of the Institution in 1902.
