Owen Price Powell died unexpectedly in London on June 5th, 1929, at the age of 57. He had only returned from Turkey three days previously.
In 1896, he entered the South African School of Mines, Kimberley, and passed all examinations, but owing to the interruption caused by the South African War he omitted to obtain his diploma. In 1902, he was appointed assistant surveyor with the Witwatersrand Gold Mining Co., Ltd., and for the next 22 years held various positions on Band mines, including 5 years as manager of the Simmer & Jack, and 6 years as superintending engineer with the Consolidated Gold Fields of South Africa, Ltd., at Johannesburg.
In 1924, he went to Canada in charge of prospecting operations for the Clines Canadian Gold Mines, in Ontario, and four years later he went to Turkey in Asia, where he was occupied in prospecting and mining operations until his death.
Mr. Powell was elected a Member of the Institution in 1927.
