Henry Meades Porter died at Sydney, N.S.W., on January 17th, 1937, at the age of 97.
His whole mining career was spent in Australia with the exception of a few years in South America in his youth. He managed many mines in New South Wales, including a number which he operated on his own account. He was a member of the first party to pierce the basalt in the New England district, N.S.W., and prove the existence of payable tin deposits, especially in the McIntyre Valley, Elsmore, which he later worked for about eight years.
Mr. Porter, who was elected a Member of the Institution in 1898, was the author of a paper on ‘The Occurrence of Diamonds at Inverell, N.S.W.’, in volume VI of the Transactions.
