Edward David Pope died in Chile on June 30th, 1927, at the age of 41.
He began his technical training at the Camborne School of Mines in 1903, but in the following year entered the Royal School of Mines, London, and he graduated in 1907 as A.R.S.M., receiving in addition the awards of the De La Beche Medal, the Board of Education prize, and a £50 Post-graduate Scholarship granted by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. In accordance with the terms of the last-named grant, he spent a year as assistant at the Broken Hill Proprietary Co.’s mines and works at Broken Hill and Port Pirie and on the conclusion of that course he spent six months in Australia visiting mines for experience.
In 1907 he went to South America to the mines of the Central Chile Copper Co., with whom he remained for five years. With the exception of brief spells of leave in England, he remained in Chile until his death, successively with the Compañia Minera Las Vacas, the Société des Mines de Cuivre de Catenia, and the Sociedad Central de Minas, Santiago.
Mr. Pope was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1907, and was transferred to Associateship in 1911 and to Membership in 1920.
