Alfred Otter died in London on January 1st, 1937, at the age of 67.
He was born in New Zealand and educated at St. George’s Grammar School, Thames. After two years as a learner in the mill of the Saxon Gold Mining Co., he worked continuously for seven years at various mines in the Thames gold field, and also studied at the newly-established Thames School of Mines. In 1894 he went to Broken Hill, N.S.W., where for over three years he carried out various contracts in the Broken Hill Proprietary mines.
In 1899 he returned to New Zealand and worked in various mines in the upper Thames district until 1903, when he left for the Gold Coast to take up an appointment at the Abosso mine. He was appointed manager of the mine in 1906 — a position which he retained for several years. He then left the Gold Coast for Burma and India, but returned later and managed several mines, including Abbontiakoon Mines, Ltd. His subsequent work, until shortly before his death, was all in Nigeria and the Gold Coast.
Mr. Otter was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1911.
