John Edwin Ogilvie (known as Ian Ogilvie) was shot dead near Ipoh, Malaya, on about 4th August, 1948, it is presumed by rebel gunmen. He was 56.
He began his career in 1906 as an apprentice engineer to Messrs. J. Lewis & Sons, Aberdeen, and in 1908 worked in the office of Messrs. Watts, Watts & Co., Ltd., at Cardiff, learning office and general mining
routine. He went to Malaya, in 1912 on his appointment, as assistant manager of Chendai Meru Hydraulic Mines, Perak, and two years later became manager in full charge of the mines. He left in 1922 to take over the managership of Tin & Rubber, Ltd., Perak (of which company he was also a director), and in 1927 transferred to the position of mines manager of Batu Anam (Ipoh) Tin, Ltd., and Purloo Tin, Ltd. From 1928 until his death he had held the position of general manager of Mern Tin Ltd being also general manager of Sungei Pari Hydraulic Tin, Ltd., for two years from 1930. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya he was interned, but resumed his work early in 1946. He was to have retired after his next leave.
Mr. Ogilvie, who was for many years a member of the Malayan Chamber of Mines, was elected to Associateship of the Institution in 1933.
