William Clifford Nicholls died in West Africa in January, 1935, at the age of 46.
His early training was in the direction of general engineering, and his first employment was in the engineering Department of the Dolcoath Mine, Cornwall, from 1905 to 1909. He next held appointments in Messrs. Holman Brothers’ Engineering Works at Camborne, and with Messrs. Tangye Brothers, Ltd., of Birmingham, for periods of two and three years respectively. From August, 1914, until well into 1920, he served in H.M. Forces.
In September, 1920, he entered the Camborne School of Mines and graduated with the 1st Class Diploma, and on completion of the course he went to the Gold Coast Colony to join the staff of the West African Diamond Syndicate. In 1925, he went to India as assistant mining engineer to the Central India. Mining Co., Ltd., but in 1932 he returned to the Gold Coast to work on the properties of the Ariston Gold Mines (1929), Ltd., at Prestea, and afterwards at Kumasi.
Mr. Nicholls was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1923, and was transferred to Associateship in 1928.
