Lieutenant Philip John Nice, Royal Engineers, was killed on active service on the Burma front in September, 1944, at the age of 25.
He was born in Southern Rhodesia and in 1936 entered the Metallurgical Branch of the Southern Rhodesian Mines Department as a learner. In June, 1937, he was appointed mill shiftsman in the Tebekwe mine, Southern Rhodesia, but came to England in 1939 to study at the School of Metalliferous Mining (Camborne), obtaining the A.C.S.M. in 1942. Shortly afterwards he joined the Army, and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers, India Command.
Mr. Nice was elected a Student of the Institution in 1942.
