William Stanley New died suddenly in London on January 15th, 1937, at the age of 50.
He was educated at Charterhouse and received his technical training at the Camborne School of Mines, gaining the Diploma of the School in 1907. After a special course in electricity at Birmingham University he went, in 1908, to the Simmer and Jack mines as an I.M.M. post-graduate student, and in May, 1910, was appointed assistant sampler and surveyor with that company.
In 1911 he came to England to study coal-mining methods both here and on the Continent, and at the end of that year returned to the Transvaal to take up a post at the City Deep. In 1912 he joined the staff of Village Deep, and in May, 1915, became sectional chief surveyor to the Randfontein Central Gold Mining Co. In the same year, however, he received his commission in the Royal Engineers, and-served until 1919, when he returned to Randfontein Central as mine captain.
In 1921 he joined the Witwatersrand Gold Mining Co., and in 1923 took an appointment in the Gold Coast with Abbontiakoon Mines, Ltd. From 1925 to 1930 he was mine manager and later acting general manager to the Cia Minera y Agricola Oploca de Bolivia, and in 1931 spent a few months in the Northern Rhodesia copper field.
Mr. New was elected a Student of the Institution in 1907, and was transferred to Associateship in 1913.
