Stanley Nettleton died on August 6th, 1923, at the age of 42.
From 1898 to 1901 he studied at the Yorkshire College (now Leeds University) whilst concurrently engaged in practical work at the Old Roundwood Collieries, near Wakefield. With the exception of a short stay in France, during which he was on the Bethune coal-mines, in 1905, he was associated with the Old Roundwood Collieries until 1911, as assistant manager for the last five years.
In 1912 he went to South Africa to take up the management of collieries in the Cape Province, and eventually transferred his activities to gold. After completing the work on which he was engaged he returned to England to enlist for service in the war, eventually receiving a commission in the Tunnelling Companies (R.E.), and serving in France and Italy. After the war he joined the staff of the Royal School of Mines as a lecturer.
Mr. Nettleton was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1919.
