Hugh Mitchell died at Maritzburg, Natal, on August 6th, 1940, at the age of 60.
He entered the Royal School of Mines in 1898, and completed his course in 1903, having during that period been engaged for seventeen months on active service in the Boer war. At the end of 1903 he returned to South Africa to take up an appointment as assistant surveyor on the Durban Roodepoort Mine. For seven years he was engaged in various capacities on that mine, Vogelstruis Estates, Transvaal and Delagoa Bay Collieries, West Rand Consolidated, the Consolidated Main Reef, and other mines, and from 1913 to 1917 he was appointed manager of the Langlaagte Estate.
He joined H.M. Forces in 1917 and served in the Royal Engineers for two years, afterwards returning to South Africa as manager of New Unified, the Government Gold Mining Areas, and Van Ryn Deep, Ltd. In 1923 he was appointed general manager of Van Ryn Deep, and three years later became general manager of Government Gold Mining Areas, from which position he retired shortly before his death.
Mr. Mitchell was elected a Member of the Institution in 1928.
