John Thomas Milligan died in Johannesburg on 5th August, 1950, at the age of 87.
From 1888 to 1895 he was successively manager of Lily Reef, Gardner Main Reef, Metropolitan Gold Mining Co., and Eastleigh Mines, all in South Africa. From 1895 to 1909 he was consulting engineer to the Bourke Trust and Estate Co., of Pretoria, and during this period he also acted as manager of Eastleigh Mines for two years and of Angelo Gold Mines, Johannesburg, for three years. In 1909 he was appointed manager of the New West Bonanza gold mine, Klerksdorp, and from then until 1919 he managed Rand Klip, Ltd., Rooiberg Minerals Development Co., Ltd., Machavie Gold Mining Co., Ltd., and Sheba Gold Mining Co., Ltd.
In 1919 Mr. Milligan set up in practice as a consultant, and from 1922 until 1928 he was consulting engineer to Anglo French Exploration Co. in Rhodesia, the Transvaal, and South-West Africa. Subsequently he resumed his private practice and also managed various mines in South and East Africa for short periods. He was active until the last few months of his life, when he began to suffer from failing sight.
Mr. Milligan was elected a Member of the Institution in 1898. His son, Mr. Thomas Milligan, is an Associate Member.
