Edward Harker Vincent Melvill died towards the close of 1914 at the age of 55 years.
From 1876 to 1879 he was at the Cape University, Cape Colony, studying surveying, etc., and made a number of surveys as Government Surveyor during that period and subsequently. In 1887 and 1888 he was employed in making a trigonometrical survey of Bechuanaland, covering an extent of 2600 square miles, following which work, during the succeeding five years to 1894 he completed various important surveys in Johannesburg, which embraced the Johannesburg Waterworks scheme and the principal mines in the vicinity. From 1895 to 1903 he was on the engineering staff of the Consolidated Gold Fields of South Africa, Ltd., as chief surveyor, during the latter part of the period being managing director of the African Land and Investment Co. From 1903 to the date of his death he was variously engaged in mining operations in the Transvaal.
Mr. Melvill was elected a Member of the Institution in 1905.
