William Murray died in a London nursing home on February 26th, 1935, at the age of 54.
A New Zealander by birth, he was educated and technically trained there, and after serving an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering he was engaged for about six years on gold dredging. In 1906 he went to the Gold Coast, where for three years he was superintendent dredge-master of five gold dredges. Thence he went to Nigeria and for six years was in the employ of the Naraguta (Nigeria) Tin Mines, Ltd., as acting or assistant manager. In 1919 he was appointed manager of the Transvaal and Rhodesian Estate, Nigerian Areas, and held that position for about eighteen months. Shortly after the conclusion of that engagement he went to Burma, to take over the management of the Indo-Burma Tin Corporation, Ltd., and later of the Tavoy Tin Dredging Corporation, Ltd., of which latter he was assistant manager for 14 years.
Mr. Murray was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1931.
