Cuthbert Hugh MacLean died in the European Hospital at Jos, West Africa on April 4th, 1944, from the effects of septicæmia after an accident, at the age of 50.
During the Great War he served in France and Salomca with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders from October, 1914, to February, 1917, and then obtained a commission in the Kings Own (R. Lancs) Regiment. He returned to France with that regiment, and was awarded the Military Cross in December, 1917.
On demobilization in 1919, he entered the Royal School of Mines and graduated in 1923 with a first-class Associateship in mining. Mr. MacLean was appointed mining assistant to the Mongu Tin Mines, Ltd, and left for Nigeria in 1239, being engaged as engineer in charge of their main camp and making three tours in Nigeria until 1929, when he returned to England, He obtained a position in 1930 as prospector with the West African Diamond Syndicate, and was employed later on development and plant work, and for a time acted as assistant general manager.
More recently he was manager of a gold dredging property in Sierra Leone, owned by Gold land, Base Metal Mines of Nigeria Ltd., and on termination of operations there in 1942 he was transferred to the staff of the Bisichi Tin Co. (Nigeria) Ltd.) in whose service he was at the time of his death.
Mr. MacLean was elected a Student of the Institution in 1923 and an Associate in 1934.
