Amyas MacGregor was killed in action by shell fire, near Ginchy, on the Somme Front, on October 13th, 1916. He was 23 years of age, and had lost a brother near the same place only four weeks previously. He joined the Royal Engineers (Territorial Branch) as 2nd Lieutenant, and went to France in December, 1914. He was promoted Lieutenant a few months later, and had been Acting Captain since March, 1916. He was mentioned in Despatches, and in the King’s Birthday Honours List for 1916 his name appeared among those who had been awarded the Military Cross for gallant and conspicuous service. When the war broke out he had just completed his third year at the Royal School of Mines.
Mr. MacGregor was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1914.
